Big Brothers and Big Sisters have influenced the lives of over 1 million children throughout thousands of communities in the United States. More than 500 Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Agencies nationwide "match" adult volunteers based on the child's specific needs and common interests.
In 1969, a group of people gathered in Palm Beach County to begin a grass roots movement to establish a Big Brothers Big Sisters Agency. In June of 1974 a commitment was made by United Way to provide start-up money for the organization. In January of 1975 action by the Center for Family Services was taken to implement the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program. Staffing and public relations to promote the service was secured.
United Way recommended in 1978 that the agency become autonomous. April 1, 1981 Big Brothers Big Sisters was officially named an independent agency.
